We Were Liars is a young adult fiction written by E Lockhart, and was for sure my favourite read of February. I chose to read this based on my friends recommendation, she said it was really good and needed to be read and I believed her. I read this book in one sitting, it was very easy to blitz through because it was just so captivating.
The storyline is hard to explain without giving anything away but I'll give it a go. The book is about the privileged Sinclair family who regularly stat on an island that they own during summer break. It is written in the point of view of Cady, who embodies the character of a spoilt rich girl from this family. From experience, you won't like this girl from the get-go, she's self absorbed and behaves in a typical, 'rich' manner. However, she definitely warms to you as you read on and the plot is revealed. In summary, the book is a tale of friendship, love, betrayal and a very complex family life, mixed with lies and truth, and not knowing which is which. I know it sounds confusing which is why you just have to read it.
For romance goers, like myself, yes there is romance in this, however don't dive into it thinking it's going to be about how a girl from a privileged life fell in love with a middle classed boy. It's not that kind of story trust me, the focus is more on this 'incident' that happened on the island one year, and as you read on you find out with Cady just what happened. Again, just read it. And don't read any reviews on it either, I'm metaphorically biting my tongue to stop myself from telling you all the heartbreaking details, you just have to read it going in blind.
The book is absolutely jaw dropping and extremely gripping, with probably the biggest twist I've ever come across in a novel. Again, it was one of those books where I finished it and needed to talk to someone about it immediately, so I also suggest finding a friend and reading it at the same time so you can pour your heart and soul out to each other in the end.
